I tried shutting down all services and processes that let me stop them, and still something was being downloaded to my PC (I disabled Automatic Updates)
My PC info.
A recently purchased Dell Vostro 1500 with XP loaded. I use McAfee virus protection and Iolo System Mechanic 7, which do have periodic updates, but they allow me to initiate downloads before the downloads occur.
After I connect via dialup and before I open my browser, my PC starts receiving data. Why is this?panda
The server may be polling the new connection. Your communications software also sends and receives data whether you do anything for the connection.
With so much open when you go online some will automatically send and receive info even if it is only a speed check (speed of connection).
Most of this early stuff is harmless. BUt keep up your guard.

Because if it didn't down load , You wouldn't have any thing on your screen.......Makes sense to me ....Maybe pick and choose what you want your start up to do .....Mmmmmmmm
Choices I love them.....
it could be the dialup program, or it could be something running in the background? another program looking for updates (and/or spyware/trojans, etc.)?
instead of using "msconfig", i use this program to control startup programs, plus it also alerts you of startup entry changes, due program changes, etc.
